For those following NBC’s new series, The Event: Did the 2.23 second shot (yes, I timed it) of this bottle of scotch strike you as odd? Michael Buchanan shares this bottle with Sean Walker, describing it as “a serious drink”, and “very rare stuff”.
Hmm. Anyone wanna start placing bets on the future significance of Natape 18-Year-Old Islay Single Malt Scotch?

Realm of speculation here, but could this whisky have been produced
by the ’strangers’ in their alternative but parallel universe and presented to Michael at some stage? Nice to know aliens appreciate the finer things in life!
thought i knew all the islay whiskys. thought i’d been caught out.lol it’s certainly not a scottish sounding word. not sure the show has enough depth for a sub-plot clue.. hope i’m wrong. not bad so far (this episode on uk)
There are only 7 Scotch Whisky distilleries on Islay, and Natape isn’t one of them. I definitely think there is a significance to the drink, ( maybe some kind of DNA altering potion). Incidentally, the term whisky comes from the Scots Gaelic ‘uisge beathe’ which means ‘water of life’ and legend states there is a connection between whisky and long-life or even immortality. Don’t Sophia’s people live longer?…
All good points. And thanks for the comment. You’re obviously a Islay distillery trivia force to be reckoned with!
Look closely at the bottom couple of lines on the label. I’m pretty sure it says “Imported by…..Sunland, CA.” I think the idea of a studio fake is a good one, but the suggestion that it may be something that the back-story of Michael.
You must have amazing resolution!
If you look at the Natape label on the StudioGraphics website link I posted, you will see the text reads:
“Imported by ISS-SGI Beverages Sunland, CA Sole US Agent”
As I mentioned in my original comment, the prop was made by StudioGraphics, Inc. (SGI) a division of Independent Studio Services (ISS). A company which just happens to be located in…wait for it…Sunland, California!
Could it be an acronym for Extra Terrestrial North American Plot Associasion?
I have been lookng at that bottle too. I’m thinking it has somthing to do with the prsion in Alaska. He could be the pilot at one time who flew people in and out of te prison. Think about it he was an internatinal pilot. It would be a good cover.
Although,I have never heard of Natape Single Malt Scotch,it did peak my interest on being a very rare Scotch Malt. I then thought of the Highlander series, where they often used faked items as well. I knew right away it was not a recognized product. So rest assured you cannot buy this item at your local liquar store.
Natape is a VERY serious drink. The word refers to an anti-viral cocktail for HIV victims who had become resistant. In addition, NATAP is an acronym for the National Aids Treatment Advocacy Project which I think started up in the mid-2000s. The long CU on the bottle was brilliant. It didn’t take away from the story line yet will give many of us something to think about afterwards. I guess it’s a new kind of product placement… public service instead of shameless huckstering.
Heavy.
I too was wondering about the close up shot of the label. I just got around to watching the episode today and its funny how my tv is paused on the same exact shot. Stumbled upon this site searching Google related to Natape. Thanks for clarifying. Great tv show nonetheless. And yes Lost was my favorite show to watch. Namaste!
You wouldn’t believe how many people have gotten to my site with the keyword “Natape” in the past week. It’s getting out of control.
I’m sure you’ve found that Natape is a fake brand from StudioGraphics. StudioGraphics Whiskey The bottle label shown on “The Event” is nicer than the one shown on the website. The label shown in the show has nice gold foil, which looks very classy. The text on the label is also a little diffrent. It is “18 year old Islay single malt scotch.”
I recently saw a documentary on PBS which featured Islay called “Martin Clunes – Islands of Britain.” Islay is an island in the southern Inner Hebrides archipelago. Islay is home to several distilleries which produce Scotch whisky, known as Islay whisky.
I know people like to scrutinize every little detail in shows like shows like “Lost,” but I don’t think there’s any significance to the brand or the bottle.
Good looking out, Andy! I hastily posted this without looking into either Islay or the “usual suspect” prop houses. Gonna add your comment as an edit.
