Blammo! Marketing (or Not a Real Selling Point)

June 23, 2010

When Blammo! released Log in the United States, they launched an infectious ad campaign that quickly took the nation by storm. If you haven’t already seen this commercial, be warned: This song will not leave your brain for a long, long time.

The jingle for Log contains all of the product’s selling points:

Bigness
Heaviness
Woodenness
Goodness

Okay, so [...]

Moving Props – Children of Men

May 29, 2010

A London-based creative group called Foreign Office worked closely with Children of Men director Alfonso Cuarón to create all of the media content, advertising, propaganda, and display systems for the film. Lucky for us geeks, they’ve bundled it all together nicely here:

I’ve touched on other elements of the BAFTA-winning production design in Children of [...]

Entreprenerdial Spirit

May 6, 2010

Bryan Ward, founder and CEO of creative ad agency Giant Ideas, does some pro-bono ad work for fictional corporations which he’s aggregated in the Flickr set Geek Ad Wednesday.
Some of my favorites:

“For those of you that might not be familiar with the movie or the book it was based on (Make Room! Make Room! by [...]

Two by Two, Hands of Blue

May 3, 2010

The Coca-Cola Company currently has more than 400 beverage brands in over 200 countries. I can’t even NAME 200 countries!
So is it a huge stretch to think that in, oh I don’t know – 517 years – the company will have expanded just a bit? Perhaps they’ll have gained a total monopoly on [...]

Lots-o’-Huggin’ Bear

April 28, 2010

Who doesn’t remember Lots-o’-Huggin’ Bear?   This super-soft (and stain-resistant!) Ursus Made-upicus was an omnipresent playtime  figure of American kids in the early 80’s. I can still recall the terse glances exchanged between Lotso and Teddy Ruxpin as they bitterly vied for my affection from opposite sides of the bedroom. From what I [...]

The Slovin Shield

April 26, 2010

From the recent 30 Rock Episode: Lee Marvin vs Derek Jeter:
As part of Tracy Jordan’s compelling argument that old-school racism is back (ever since Barry Obams got into office) he points out:
Somethin’s goin on. You know what I seen last night? A Slovin Shield commercial… with a BLACK burglar!

Greed is Bad… or Something

April 21, 2010

In 2009 there was quite a buzz over the release of an edgy advert for an imaginary perfume brand named Greed. The hype was understandable, as it was directed by Roman Polansky, and starred Natalie Portman and Michelle Williams. The brand itself was conceptualized by artist Francesco Vezzoli, and I’m guessing it was [...]

Grow a Pair

April 13, 2010

Despite my own personal lack of even a modicum of decency or moral direction, I try to keep it at least PG-13 on this blog.  That’s why I’ll just leave this LINK here, and allow you click at your own discretion.  This commercial for the imaginary pharmaceutical, Testemax,  is brought to you by filmmaker Nate Bloch.

Quietus: You Decide When

April 5, 2010

Today’s pharmaceutical ads only have a few seconds to squeeze in their pitch before launching into a lengthy enumeration of side effects. Not a problem for Quietus, however, as there could only be one negative result: not dying.

Quietus‘ primary tagline is “You decide when”, but they’ve also used variations such as “It’s your [...]

This Blood’s for You

March 25, 2010

This commercial for Tru Blood (from the HBO show of the same name) packs a fictional multiverse whammy. Not only is it hawking a defictionalized product, but a close look about five seconds in reveals that the alpha males are clinking “de-Simpsonized” Duff Beer cans!

Spoon Your Way to Health

March 21, 2010

From the 1952 episode Lucy Does a TV Commercial:

I’m not sure which would draw more heat from the FDA – the fact that this Vitameatavegamin ad claims the tonic restores pep and popularity, or the fact that the product contains 23% alcohol.
